There purpose is to be this night impossible threat to all life that force everyone to cooperate and come together to try and stop them. Personally any attempt to try and put rhyme or reason, especially a positive one, on the Reaper's actions was a terrible idea. But being Synthetic life forms the Reapers couldn't do Biotics and thus wiped out all advanced life every 50k years in this long running evolution experiment to create the perfect species that had the mental fortitude and biotic aptitude to stop the spread of Dark Matter and prevent the premature death of the universe. Then that morphed into this idea that no actually dark matter was cause the accelerated death of the galaxy ultimately leading to the Big Crunch and Biotics were the only way to stop it. Originally their idea was that Biotics caused entropy/dark energy and the Reapers wiped everyone out every 50k years was to stop the spread as civilizations became more advanced and thus used more Biotics. IIRC the rough idea was that the Reapers seeded ME technology like the relays and Citadel in the first place so that organics would develop the technology in a predictable way that could be shut off when the culling times came, rather than allow them to stumble upon it and abuse it in an uncontrolled fashion.Ĭlick to shrink.It was a really half baked idea that personally I found as bad or worse than the Synthetics vs Organics we got. One of the writers later stated that this was a rough idea for the Reaper's motivations, that the universe itself was aging more rapidly than it would otherwise, and the cause was the mass effect technology organics would inevitably develop and the biotics that would result. You question Tali and another quarian about it afterward and they say they were on the planet trying to study why the star had apparently progressed much further into its life cycle and started to expand millions of years before it should be they detected a large buildup of dark energy and there's a dangling plot thread of the quarians sending out scientists to investigate other possible dark energy buildups to see if it's happening to other stars.
